I'm curious to know how people breed shiny's. I just started breeding and am completely green in the process. I would like to eventually learn, but for right now I only want to be educated. Can someone please help?

It's pretty much luck based. There are methods to increase the odds though, such as the Masuda method

What is the Mesuda Method?
Where you have two pokemon from different regions breed an egg. This increases the odds of it being shiny... Preferably a foreign ditto, as you can breed almost any pokemon with a ditto

So a Japanese Ditto from Gen 2 breed with an American Pokémon from Gen 7 is an example of this?

Technically yes, but you can't transfer from gen 2 :p

I'm new to all this, so please bear with me. How do you know you'll get a shiny? Simply increasing the odds can't be enough, right? People who are avid trainers want consistency and dependability.

By legitimate means, only way to breed a shiny is with luck.

With less than legit means, you can just generate a shiny pokemon with save editing

@Ameris there are different ways for breeding shiny Pokemon. The first way as people mentioned before is (i) Masuad Method, which takes two Pokemon from different nationalities and breeds them together for a better chance of receiving a shiny egg, and (ii) SV (shiny value checking). Since both the trainer and the egg received have a shiny value, if the shiny value of the egg and the trainer match, the Pokemon will hatch shiny for that trainer. This is why people do exchanges of eggs if they know their trainer SV. The first method requires no access to hacking methods, while the second does in order to find your SV and the SV of the eggs. And note that if the Shiny Charm still works the same way from the previous generation, it will not work while doing Masuda Method.

If you don't care about hatching perfect IVs, HAs, and egg moves however, you could try this generations method for catching shiny Pokemon in the wild. This generations method for shiny hunting uses the new SOS feature (calling for help) + the Adrenaline Orb + false swipe preferably. I think the shiny chances of Pokemon calling in for help becomes 1/500 rather than the regular 1/4000, so if you are only looking for "trophy shiny" Pokemon you should try this method. :)

get a male (i would sat ditto) that's from another language than your game
a female of the pokemon you want as a shiny
a pokemon with the ability flamebody (in sun/moon the best one is fletchinder)
and hatch them eggs
the other language male gives you a higher chance of the egg being shiny, and the flamebody ability cuts the hatch time in half
flamebody does NOT stack
