Guide to Competitive Battling by MMawile

Hey guys and girls it’s me MMawile from perfectpokemon.com and today I’m here to talk about team building and competitive. First and foremost im not an expert on this, but im pretty damn close :D anyways this is a guide built for the new guy or newb (to put thing crudely) that want to make a splash in the meta game. I’ll be using my team as example

(Bisharp, rotom-w, furfrou, florges, noivern, and mawile(mega)

Ok let’s get started

First step to building your team is to select your all time #1 favorite Pokémon.
"Strong Pokémon. Weak Pokémon. That is only the selfish perception of people. Truly skilled Trainers should try to win with the Pokémon they love best.” - Elite 4 Karen

Bisharp (M) @ Dread Plate

Ability: Defiant, Shiny: Yes

EVs: 68 HP / 252 Atk / 188 Spd

Adamant Nature

- Knock Off

- Iron Head

- Stealth Rock

- Sucker Punch

Let’s begin. I love bisharp! He’s so badass! Great ghost and fairy killer (and a lot of other types). IMO he was introduced a generation too early. But never the less he’s a great Pokémon. Most of the time I lead with him if he isn’t needed for later I set up SR and then use knock off on their lead. Most of the time its usually a ferrothorn and kinda relies on its item to be pretty annoying. Iron head is for Fairies and Ice types which are troublesome for another Pokémon of mine. Finally sucker punch is used to hit faster Pokémon. The Evs are custom max ATK to make Bisharp hit as hard as possible, 68 HP to give him some bulk, and 188 Speed to out speed bulky rotom forms and knock off their item (cause they really rely on their item). Defiant is the ability of choice because of stick web (-speed, +2 in ATK).

Florges (f) @ Pixie Plate

Ability: Flower Veil, Shiny: Yes

EVs: 252 HP / 176 SAtk / 80 SDef

Calm Nature

- Wish

- Moonblast

- Calm Mind

- Aromatherapy

My 2nd Pokemon is Florges. Florges’s role on the team is clerk support (wish + aromatherapy). However when push comes to shove florges can fend for herself. With Moonblast + STAB + Pixie plate = lolz
She also has calm mind to boost even further. With this set florges can single handedly defeat a special attacking Aegislash… WOW. The Evs are also custom, Max HP to have a lot of bulk, 176 SP.Atk to reach 304 with a calm nature, and dump the rest on to SP.Def to bring you up to 400. With this EV spread Florges can sweep unprepared teams that only expect her to be a clerk.

Rotom-Wash @ Chesto Berry

Ability: Levitate

EVs: 252 HP / 200 Def / 56 Spd

Bold Nature

- Rest

- Volt Switch

- Will-O-Wisp

- Hydro Pump

My 3rd Pokemon is Rotom-W. Rotom-w not only forms ½ of my volt turn core but it’s role is also to spread status. Its also the classic ChestoRest strategy. He helps against heatran which is a bother to Florges and Bisharp and serves a counter to talonflame. That’s pretty much it for rotom-w its quite common so people know a lot about it…

Furfrou (f) @ leftovers

Ability: Fur Coat, shiny: yes

EVs: 252 HP / 252 Def / 6 SP.Def

Impish nature

- Roar

- U-Turn

- Return

- Thunder Wave

As we all know I love furfrou! (Especially the Matron trim!). Furfrou serves as my pivot, parashuffler, the other ½ of my volt turn core and completes a defense core with florges. All four of which she does beautifully. The EVs are staples and should not be messed with as are the moves, with the ev spread furfrou can survive a max attack (adamant nature) life orb close combat from Tarrakion…DAMN!!! And paralyze him then dip with U-turn. Leftovers is the item of choice, but if you want rocky helmet is also a good choice just be aware though that even though you gain more passive damage you lose passive recovery, besides furfrou is mainly targeted on her special side. Which is why florges exist on the team.

Noivern (f) @ life orb

Female

Ability: Infiltrator

EVs: 252 SP.Atk / 252 Speed / 6 SP.Def

Timid nature

- Hurricane

- Focus Blast

- Shadow Ball

- Draco Meteor

Noivern is my baby, and wall breaker (wall avoider…lolz) the standard life orb noivern set. No need to explain. Shares type synergy with rotom-w, bisharp, and mawile. Hurricane kills literally almost all fighting types even assault vest conkeldurr. Focus blast mames lucario and terrakion. Draco meteor is STAB, and shadow ball is coverage. Infiltrator is a must!!! Besides its funny seeing people freak out when a move goes through substitute…lolz

Mawile (F) @ Mawilite

Ability: Intimidate = Huge Power

EVs: 252 HP / 252 Atk / 6 Def

Adamant Nature

- Iron Head

- Play Rough

- Sucker Punch

- Power-Up Punch

Mega Mawile is the star of my team and is my absolute favorite Pokemon since ruby version!!! She is also the most extreme “rags to riches” pokemon in this generation shift. For those that don’t know Mega Mawile is now known for having the HIGHEST ATTACK stat in Pokemon history. Factoring 339 ATK (adamant nature and 252 EVs) with Huge Power (339 x 2 = 678) that’s the equivalent of having a base 259 Attack stat. that’s Crazy ! She has perfect synergy with noivern and Rotom-w cause they cover each other’s weaknesses. She is basically my late game cleaner and last resort. Not having to set up swords dance because of power-up punch (albeit its slower to gain the boost but it does damage, can’t be taunted, and offers coverage).

That was good MMawile, keep up the good work! I appreciate it, as someone who doesn't have too much time put into competitive battling or team building yet.

The core you stated with rotom, mawile and noivern is so damn op that you basically rickroll every unprepared arse @ battle spot when you have enough dmg-output @ rotom-w since most ppl wont "attack him" before cleaning the mawile / noivern - if you add something to soak up the common "WoW" your core is ready to go and break faces:D!

I am going to mention this once and only once. Terrible item choice for both Bisharp and Florges. Bisharp either needs the Life Orb or the Focus sash to be at its peak. Florges could use a Sitrus Berry. I think even noobs would not use useless plates for items, but this is Perfect Pokemon. Also. I would not use Power-Up Punch. That is a terrible waste of a slot for the now banned Mega Mawile. I think even a noob would use Swords Dance for that slot. I know this is a first time team, but even first time teams are more well-developed. They maybe inferior at first, I mean there is a Bisharp with SR and Noviern on this team. However, YOU NEVER USE PLATES ON A POKEMON!

Spooky Plate Aegislash was a thing at some point, Bisharp can also effectively run Blackglasses but maybe that's just my preference

Spooky Plate Aegislash? Wow... I thought Bisharp would benefit more from a Life Orb, but that is my opinion. Either that item or Focus Sash.

Yeah on mixed sets so his shadow ball and shadow sneak would hit hard, Not sure if it's still a thing though

Life Orb Bisharp works too but, I like to get up a SD and sweep once his counters are gone so Blackglasses is better for my personal usage because it prevents him from losing health and possibly dying if low on health when he's trying to sweep endgame

It's just a personal thing I guess

True, but that extra boost on Iron Head would help out a lot. I would typically have on my Bisharp these moves

Night Slash
Iron Head
Sucker Punch
Swords Dance

Both Night Slash and Sucker Punch are used for different situations. I would use Night Slash when I did not need the +1 priority and or a chance of a critical hit. I would use Sucker Punch when I needed a faster opponent dead asap. However, since Aegislash is in ubers, I would update this set.

Really Night Slash over Knock Off? I haven't seen any Bisharp without Knock Off this gen

I knew I forgot a move. I was thinking of VGC which is a completely different metagame. I thought it was Night Slash, but I was thinking with a 5th generation mindset. I used Bisharp mostly 5th generation. I only used him once in 6th generation with Knock Off, but I only used him once.

Just my 2 cents and I guess I can use this for my first post.

For Bisharp, if you are going to use a Stealth Rock Bisharp, Focus Sash would be its best item as it can guarantee SR up instead of being OHKO'd by common priority such as Mach Punch. Onto Florges, wouldn't Sylveon cover this role better. It has more of an offensive presence while being able to support the rest of the team in Heal Bell + Wish. There's not much I can say about Rotom-W except that it doesn't need more than 44 Speed EVs on a Defensive set since that outspeeds Jolly Azumarill. As I can see, you love Furfrou but there are better options in defensive pivots. Furfrou has no bulk whatsoever. Fur Coat may seem nice, but Furfrou cannot make decent use out of it due to typing and defensive stats. For Noivern, Shadow Ball hits absolutely nothing. Anything Noivern has on that set is much stronger than a SE Shadow Ball. I would uggest replacing it with Fire Blast / Flamethrower. Lastly, on Mawile, I would suggest running some speed like 136 Speed or something around that. Also, Power Up Punch isn't needed. Swords Dance is a bunch better move like Giovanni stated. Majority of the times, Mawile wouldn't need Iron Head unless you are really aiming to hit Mega Venusaur. A better 4th move option could be Knock Off (allows you to beat Ghost types with Will-O such as SubWisp Gengar) or something like Fire Fang which allows Mawile to break through Ferrothorn and Skarmory.

I hope I helped.

Seems like a great team, and gives more options for me to consider while team building. Nice job!
