Do you mean the original ruby? Or Omega Ruby? In the first ruby I think you could trade shards for evolution stones. In the new one getting ego stones is incredibly easy. You just need to fully EV/super train any pokemon to unlock super secret training. Then, depending on what opponent you are facing you can get one get an evo stone as a prize. I hope this helps.
