And if so is it even reasonable to try one? Isn't avoiding battles easier then ever, where's the challenge?

I still do and it's addicting! I'm actually running HG right now. It makes the games much more fun and raises the stakes. You'll even be caught by surprise at how useful pokemon you least expected are.

As for avoiding battles, you really don't want to as you'll need the EXP so you don't get wiped by the next important trainer (gym, rival, etc.)

In this case im referring to the newer games where the map is more open and less forces you to walk through grass and fight when your trying to run back to heal.

In this instance unless you allow yourself to be risky you never really are at risk of failing so wheres the point and challenge
