Cordell's Guide To Chain Fishing

You may be wondering, "What in the world is shiny fishing?". Hi, my name is Cordell and I'm here to tell you all about it.

Chain Fishing is a method of finding shiny Pokemon by consecutively fishing in the same spot over and over. Each consecutive time you get a bite from a wild Pokemon while fishing at the same spot, your chance of encountering a shiny Pokemon increases. This is called a chain.

Breaking A Chain
When a chain is broken, the probability of finding a shiny Pokemon resets. There are a few things that will break a chain. If you move from the spot you are positioned in, you break the chain. If you pull up your fishing rod too early or too late, the chain breaks. And lastly if you get the message "nothing seems to be biting", the chain has been broken.

How Can I Improve My Chances Of Landing A Pokemon?
There are two things that can be done to make sure you land a Pokemon, and that you don't get the "nothing seems to be biting" message. It's recommended that you have a Pokemon that has the Suction Cups ability or the Sticky Hold ability in the first slot of your party. Doing this increases your chances of getting a bite while fishing. It is also recommended that you fish in an enclosed area, as this also increases the odds of getting bites consecutively.

Come Prepared!
So what good is finding a shiny Pokemon if you can't catch it? Bring supplies such as net balls, ultra balls, and quick balls. Be sure to bring along a Pokemon with false swipe so you can weaken the shiny.

Good Luck!
That's it for now! Let me know how you liked my guide and feel free to ask any questions.

Until next time, Cordell

It does take a little concentration, you really just have to work on getting it right when you see the sign. I always seemed to mess it up by reeling to early myself. The fishing was a lot worse in previous gens though so I really don't mind it now. But if your just looking to catch your first shiny or find something in the water, this method is the easiest for me at least I rarely get a chain of 30-40 without finding a shiny of some sort. This works with any rod too so you can be a little more selective by looking up which rods bring which pokes in the area your fishing, you can also fish while surfing so your not just stuck fishing from land and it allows you to find the good enclosed areas Cordell was talking about. Hope this helps just keep practicing and you will be able to get chains of 50 in no time!

Oh and yes, there are videos of this on youtube, that's how I learned! The guide here is definitely a good overview of the process but I guess if your more of a visual learner a video might help.

Thanks for the helpful guide! I've tried chain fishing a few times but was unsuccessful lol. Maybe I'll try my hand at it again later on.

I keep reeling it in too late
but the sign is still up when i reel it

Something that really helps for me when I am fishing is focusing on the sound the game makes when you hook something, instead of the accompanying exclamation point. For whatever reason, my ears are faster than my eyes. I actually do a better job chaining when my eyes are closed and I focus just with my ears, lol!

Where did you find the shiny horsea? Really wanna find one of those myself!

In Alpha Sapphire, just west of Pacifidlog Town, Route 132, I think it is? I have trouble remembering which routes are which, lol. Anyway, I found a nice little nook of rocks and planted myself in front of it. It took a chain of 46, but I finally caught him!

Me too! The teal green is such a nice color! I might actually try for another one so I can keep one as a horsea and evolve the other (because shiny kingdra is pretty epic-looking). I got really lucky with getting a shiny horsea on my first chain in that spot though. Most of the pokemon I came across there were wailmers, so I was pleasantly surprised to catch a shiny other than wailmer!

Ah I can imagine wailmers being annoying lol but yeah shiny kingdra is awesome too, I'm gonna try and breed a shiny horsea for a competitive Kingdra set!
