Note: I originally posted this on another forum but thought it would be worth sharing it here too. Hope it helps some people!

Thanks to the changes in Pokemon X and Y, it is now easier than ever to get your favourite shiny pokemon as IVs no longer factor into the equation. There are currently four known methods to increase your chances of obtaining a shiny pokemon in gen 6, all of which are detailed below.

Masuda Method

All that this method involves is breeding together two pokemon that are from different regions - ideally one from your own game and one traded from someone in another country. This is the easiest method that requires the least amount of work, and it's the best way to get legit perfect IV shinies with egg moves too. Bear in mind the pokemon have to be from the same egg group (or a ditto) and that they need to be from seperate regions. You can tell if they are from different regions by seeing if it has a black region tag next to its name in the pokemon status page.

The easiest possible way to do this is to obtain a ditto from a different region for breeding, so that you don't need to worry about obtaining foreign pokemon of specific genders/egg groups.

There is a 1 in 1:683 chance that the pokemon hatching out of the egg will be shiny using this method, which is now much higher than it was in previous games. With a shiny charm this rate is even better, with roughly a 1:450 chance! (reference)

Tips:

- Have a pokemon with the ability Flame Body or Magma Armor in your party to decrease hatch time. Talonflame is a good choice for this since it can learn Fly as well.
- Use Hatching O-Power as often as possible to decrease hatch time. Guide on how to get Hatching o-power here.

PokeRadar Method

This is by far the most complicated method to obtain shinies. This method is only usable for pokemon you can catch in grassy patches, with the exception of roaming legendary pokemon.

Before you start you will need:

1. The PokeRadar
You are given the PokeRadar from the top right scientist on the 2nd floor of Professor Sycamore's lab after you beat the Elite Four.

2. As many super repels as you can afford (200+ minimum).

3. Plenty of pokeballs

4. (Optional) A pokemon that can OHKO easily, and a paralysis/sleep-inflicting/false swipe pokemon in your team.
You need to make a lot of pokemon faint to build up chains. You can use a high PP move to help you count how many pokemon you have chained so far.

Good Grass and Bad Grass

The most important thing to remember when using the PokeRadar is that there is good grass and bad grass.

When you use the PokeRadar, some patches of grass around your character will shake. The harder the grass shakes, the rarer the pokemon is. After starting your chain you will need to remember what type of shaking grass you entered, and only ever enter the same type of shaking grass as when you started the chain. Going into a different type of shaking grass will break your chain.

Never, EVER go into grass that barely shakes at all. If you do, a message along the lines of “Huh? But there don’t seem to be any Pokemon around…” will pop up and your chain will immediately break!

From personal experience I would suggest only ever go into the violently shaking grass, never the slightly shaking grass. This will make your life far easier, as slightly shaking grass is far easier to miss and can mean the difference between you breaking a chain and reaching past a chain of 40.

To successfully chain a pokemon, only go into shaking grass patches that are 4 squares away from your character. Do not go to the edge of the grass as your chain will end. Leaving the patch of grass will also abruptly end your chain.

Never, ever walk into the square of grass directly behind your character. Since your character’s head blocks your view of this square, it could potentially mean the breaking of your chain since you did not see it shake.

Building Chains

1. Charge your PokeRadar - It takes 50 steps to charge.

2. Use your repel. Walk into the middle of the chosen patch of grass and use your PokeRadar. Make sure the grass patch is at least 6 squares wide or 6 squares tall (preferably larger) because you don’t want to enter the outer squares of grass in the patch or the grass closer than 4 squares to your character.

3. You will see different patches of grass shake. Go into one of the shaking patches to start your chain. You will need to remember what kind of shake the grass did (was it violently shaking or medium shaking?) because you will need to keep going into the same type of shaking grass. Also, only go into “good” grass!

4. If the pokemon you encounter is the one you want a shiny of, you will need to make it faint. If not, then simply run away from battle, recharge your radar and try again.

5. After making the first in your chain of your desired pokemon faint, the grass will shake again as soon as you exit battle. If you do not see the right kind of shaking grass, don’t panic! Simply recharge the PokeRadar by walking 50 steps in the patch of grass (taking care not to walk into any shaking patches or to the edges of the grass), and then use it again. This will not break your chain.

6. After building up a chain of about 40 of the same pokemon, sparkling shaking grass will start to appear! This sparkling patch of grass has a shiny pokemon hiding in it! Congratulations! Remember that the type of shaking needs to be the same as your original shake when starting the chain. If you do not see the right kind of shake, don’t worry, just recharge your PokeRadar (taking care not to walk into any shaking patches or to the edges of the grass), and then use it again.

7. When you finally see the right kind of sparkly grass, congratulations! All that’s left is for you to successfully catch the pokemon. Remember that catching a pokemon will end your radar chain, so you will not be able to keep getting consecutive shiny pokemon in the same chain.

Tips:

- You will only ever encounter pokemon you have already seen on that route and they must be viewable in your pokedex (whether caught or not).
- After battle, there is a small chance that the music will change from the normal PokeRadar music to a more up-beat music. This means that there is a higher chance of encountering shiny pokemon!
- Encountering the roaming legendary pokemon will not break your chain, so don’t worry if you bump into one!
- Bumping into any other kind of pokemon will break your chain.
- Going into the game menu while chaining WILL break your chain. If you need to restore health/PP remember to do so whilst in battle, not outside of battle.
- Using the roller skates will reset your chain. Remember to keep your fingers away from that circle pad!
- Using any other key item will break your chain. Register your PokeRadar to the Y button and remove all other key items that may be assigned.
- Hatching an egg will reset your chain.
- Unfortunately, you cannot use your PokeRadar in very tall grass or in the Friend Safari :(

Fishing Method

This method is similar to the PokeRadar method in that you build up “chains” of pokemon encounters. It is, however, a lot quicker and easier than the two aforementioned methods.

You will need a pokemon with the ability Suction Cups or Sticky Hold as the first pokemon in your party (it can be fainted). An Inkay is a nice easy choice for this. This ensures that you will consecutively land a pokemon almost all of the time, allowing you to build up a large chain very easily and quickly. You will also need any fishing rod. Remember that the type of fishing rod you use determines the types of pokemon you will encounter.

Which species of pokemon you encounter through fising does not matter, just as long as you keep landing pokemon over and over again. Unlike PokeRadar, when you enter battle with the landed pokemon you do not need to make it faint. Just run away from the battle and take out your fishing rod again. Catching a pokemon will end your fishing chain so avoid doing so until you see your desired shiny pokemon.

It is very important that you do not enter the menus and DO NOT MOVE FROM YOUR CURRENT POSITION OR THE CHAIN WILL BREAK. This includes changing which direction your character is facing!

Using any other key item will break your chain. Register your fishing rod to the Y button and remove all other key items that may be assigned.

Hoarde Battle Method

Hoarde battles are an excellent way to catch shiny pokemon, as they increase the likelihood of you finding one in a wild battle fivefold! This method is pretty simple, too. Just get into a lot of hoarde battles. That's it. Make sure you have a pokemon with the move sweet scent, and use it whilst standing in grass to activate a hoarde battle. If there is no shiny pokemon in the hoarde, simply run away and use sweet scent again.

Tips:

-A pokemon with the move false swipe is recommended to easily get the shiny pokemon's hp down without accidentally making it faint.
-Avoid zangoose + seviper hoardes with this method as they will start attacking each other during battle - risking making the shiny pokemon faint.
-Not all pokemon can be caught via hoard battles. For a full list of available hoarde battle pokemon see this list.
