In Generation 1, the only Pokéballs were the 'Poké Ball, Great Ball, Ultra Ball, Master Ball, and the Safari Ball'
Poké Ball: A device for catching wild Pokémon. It's thrown like a ball at a Pokémon, comfortably encapsulating its target.
Great Ball: A good, high-performance Pokéball that provides a higher catch rate than the Poké Ball can.
Ultra Ball: An ultra-high-performance Pokéball that that provides a higher catch rate than the Great Ball.

Master Ball: The best Pokéball with the ultimate level of performance. With it, you can catch any Pokémon without fail.
Safari Ball: A special Pokéball which can only be used in the Great Marsh. It is recognized by the Camouflage pattern on it.

In Generation 2, some Pokéballs were added, with the 'Level Ball, Lure Ball, Moon Ball, Friend Ball, Heavy Ball, Fast Ball, and Sport Ball', but these Pokéballs were not available in Generation 4 until HeartGold and SoulSilver were released.
Level Ball: A Pokéball that makes it easier to catch Pokémon that are at a lower level than your Pokémon.
Lure Ball: A Pokéball that is good for catching Pokémon that you reel in with a rod while out fishing.

Heavy Ball: A Pokéball that is better than usual at catching very heavy Pokémon.
Fast Ball: A Pokéball that makes it easier to catch Pokémon that are usually very quick to run away.
Sport Ball: A special Pokéball that is used during the bug catching contest.

In Generation 3, more Pokéballs were added, with the 'Premier Ball, Repeat Ball, Timer Ball, Nest Ball, Net Ball, Dive Ball, and Luxury Ball' The Premier Ball is Identical to the Pokéball, but one Premier Ball is given for every 10 Pokéballs bought in a PokéMart.
Premier Ball: A somewhat rare Pokéball that was made as a commemorative item used to celebrate an event of some sort.
Repeat Ball: A somewhat different Pokéball that works especially on a Pokémon species which has been caught before.
Timer Ball: A somewhat different Pokéball that becomes progressively more effective the more turns are taken in battle.
Nest Ball: A somewhat different Pokéball that becomes more effective the lower level of the wild Pokémon.
Net Ball: A somewhat different Pokéball that is more effective when attempting to catch a water or bug Pokémon.
Dive Ball: A somewhat different Pokéball that works especially on Pokémon that live underwater.
Luxury Ball: A Particularly comfortable Pokéball that makes a wild Pokémon quickly grow friendlier after being caught.

In Generation 4, even more Pokéballs were added, with the 'Heal Ball, Quick Ball, Dusk Ball, Cherish Ball, and the Park Ball'. The Cherish Ball can not be obtained any way else except when holding Event Pokemon.
Heal Ball: A remedial Pokéball that restores the HP of a Pokémon caught with it and it eliminates any status condition.
Quick Ball: A somewhat different Pokéball that has a more successful catch rate if used at the beginning of a wild encounter.

In Generation 5, only 1 Pokéball was added, and that is the 'Dream Ball'. Dream balls were introduced in the Entree Forest. When a Trainer 'Speaks' to a Pokémon, a Dream Ball appears in the Trainer's Bag. Dream Balls work like Master Balls in the Entree Forest with a 100% Catch Rate.
Dream Ball: A special Pokéball that appears in your bag out of nowhere in the Entree Forest. It can catch any Pokémon.
