Despite an overall mediocre showing at E3 by Nintendo, there was a really strong showing for Pokemon. Along with a demo, a juicy trailer was also released showing off a lot of new information and some nice tidbits about previously shown abilities and Pokemon.
First off three brand new Pokemon were shown: Yungoos, Pikipek, and Grubbin. These Pokemon are available on early routes and are likely to be the bird, rodent and bug Pokemon found on every early route and they don't disappoint.
Yungoos is the loitering Pokemon and is known for it's fierce appetite and strong jaws. Yungoos is a normal type and is said to be very common throughout Alola despite not being native to Alola. While very little is known about Yungoos we do know about its abilities. Yungoos can have either strong jaw (1.5x power to biting moves) and a brand new and in my opinion exciting ability in stake out. Stake out allows Yungoos to deal double damage any time an opponent switches in on it .
Next up is Pikipek the woodpecker Pokemon. Pikipek is a normal flying type Pokemon with a killer beak. It is said that Pikipek can drill through both trees and even rocks. Pikipek often forms strong bonds with trainers and trainers close to Pikipek can even understand potential warnings Pikipek gives out via a change in it's call. Pikipek gets the abilities keen eye (accuracy cannot be lowered) and skill link (all multi hit moves hit the max number of times which is generally 5). Skill link is definitely the more interesting of the two considering the frequency of fury attack being given to normal flying types and it is rumored that it will also get bullet seed based on this description "Pikipek will attack distant opponents by zipping seeds at them. These shots have enough strength to embed the seeds in tree trunks." (Pokemon.com)
Lastly is Grubbin the larva Pokemon. Grubbin is a bug type Pokemon and is known for it's sturdy pinsir like jaws. While there isn't a whole lot of info on Grubbin, we do know that it does like electricity hinting at a possible typing or at least type coverage somewhere in its evolution line. Grubbin gets the ability swarm (1.5x power on bug moves in a pinch).
Another big part of the announcement was the battle royal feature!!! Battle royal is the first official FFA style of battle in a Pokemon game and it brings with it a slight variation on the tried and true formula from gen 6. In battle royal, it isn't about being the last man standing as it is about points. Points are awarded for KOs and how many Pokemon you have left. This style of play should create a lot of highly strategic gameplay experience forcing players to make reads on opponents as well as create a solid strategy around the type of gameplay they want in the FFA.
There was a small bit of time devoted to showing off a few smaller details on a few previously announced Pokemon. Details on Poplio, Magearna, Solgaleo and Lunala have come about. First, Lunala and Solgaleo have new forms that can be gone into by using special moves. We don't really know anything about these forms however. Magearna's Soul Heart ability was revealed to boost special attack when any Pokemon in play faints. This works somewhat similarly to moxie except that it also works when Pokemon faint that Magearna doesn't knock out. Poplio was revealed to get disarming voice early on bring speculation that it could potentially be water fairy.
Finally, a couple of gameplay features have been revealed. Most notably, the effectiveness of moves is now fully visible when scrolling over moves in game. This is especially effective for new players to the series and as you encounter brand new Pokemon along your journey. You can also see how much any given stat has boosted much like showdown does now, which is very relevant in competitive battling.
There were a few other things shown as well, but I haven't had the time to sort through it all. If anyone has the demo that they can go through, it would be much appreciated if any new details can be brought up in the comments. Anyway, hope you guys are as hype as I am!
